  15. <p>     DIED. DOMENICO MODUGNO, 66, singer and songwriter; of a heart
  16. attack; on the island of Lampedusa, off Sicily. Born in southern
  17. Italy, Modugno took top prize at the 1958 San Remo music festival
  18. for Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu (In the Blue, Painted in Blue),
  19. a song inspired by a Chagall painting. That summer the upbeat
  20. tune swept the globe, making the mustachioed troubadour an unlikely
  21. star on the Ed Sullivan Show and in nightclubs. Ultimately 22
  22. million copies of Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu were sold worldwide,
  23. recorded by some 200 artists, including Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald
  24. and Dean Martin. Modugno wrote other songs, worked in movies,
  25. and even served in the Italian Parliament, but nothing ever
  26. equaled the sensation of Nel Blu,--known in the U.S. by the
  27. word repeated in its compulsively singable refrain: Volare.
