<p> DIED. DOMENICO MODUGNO, 66, singer and songwriter; of a heart
attack; on the island of Lampedusa, off Sicily. Born in southern
Italy, Modugno took top prize at the 1958 San Remo music festival
for Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu (In the Blue, Painted in Blue),
a song inspired by a Chagall painting. That summer the upbeat
tune swept the globe, making the mustachioed troubadour an unlikely
star on the Ed Sullivan Show and in nightclubs. Ultimately 22
million copies of Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu were sold worldwide,
recorded by some 200 artists, including Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald
and Dean Martin. Modugno wrote other songs, worked in movies,
and even served in the Italian Parliament, but nothing ever
equaled the sensation of Nel Blu,--known in the U.S. by the
word repeated in its compulsively singable refrain: Volare.
